Several members were required to leave, while others left on their own, simply not willing to put forth any effort to improve the Chapter. In addition, we discovered gross financial mismanagement of Chapter funds which lead to significant debt with the International Fraternity. Through some very hard work by the ABT and our remaining actives, we were able to go into this semester debt free.

Due to membership issues, the Chapter started the semester with 5 actives, and a mandate from HQ to achieve campus average in size (31) by December 31, 2010, or be closed. ABT set our own goal for the Chapter to obtain 10 new Associate Members by October 11. This goal was not reached. Therefore, it was decided by the ABT to recommend to HQ that our Chapter be closed.

The recommendation has been received and approved by HQ, and the closing process has begun.

From here, some negotiations will take place with the University to ensure a smooth return and recolonization in 3-5 years. Because of our "in good standing" status with the University, and the fact that ABT took the lead in this restructuring, Kent State will be putting the Chapter on a "Suspended" status, rather than completely removing us from their books, thus making the process of our return an easier one.

The 5 actives that remained this semester did their best in the face of enormous obstacles. Particularly, Kyle Evans, our "A". Kyle stepped up and worked as hard as anyone to try to keep our Chapter's doors open. He deserves our admiration and respect.

Nick Hohenberger, Steve Bossart, Marquez Brown, Brian Marzi, and Darren Talbert were integral members of this process from the alumni side. I hate to think how many total hours all these men took away from their families, work and social lives in order to try and help our Chapter survive.

Lastly, I want to say that while this is a dark day, no, the darkest day, for our Chapter, I and the other members of our ABT are extremely positive and, for that matter, excited about the future. We learned a tremendous amount in this process, not just about our active members, but about how our ABT and alumni base can and needs to improve.

Here is a paragraph from an email written by Steve Bossart, that I think sums things up well:

"I am proud of the alumni who were involved with the Chapter. We took some hard stands to ensure that Delta Chi's name would not be tarnished at Kent State. It was a gamble as to whether the Chapter would survive, and in the end, it did not. But if the Chapter had progressed along the road it was going, debt would have accumulated and risk management concerns would have escalated and I was fearful someone may have been seriously hurt. I am equally proud of the five young men who came back to school this fall committed to trying to make Delta Chi work for the right reasons. In the end, they couldn't do it, but they are fine representatives of Delta Chi and I am proud to call each of them my brother. The deck was stacked against them, but they all paid their dues and tried to make it work. I am also proud that we will pay our obligations to the Fraternity (mostly the risk management assessment) and close down the chapter with no debt to Delta Chi. That was something we fought hard to make sure didn't happen, and in my experience, that doesn't happen very often."

Damn proud,

Eric Hancsak

Founder's Day Dinner Wednesday, October 13

Please join us Wednesday, October 13 @ 6:30 at Bellacinos in Stow to celebrate Delta Chi Founder's Day.

Please RSVP to Steve Bossart by October 8.

Fall Semester Begins

It's been a while since our last post. Here's what's been happening. First the important stuff:

- At our ABT meeting last Thursday (Sept 16) we focussed our discussion on recruitment. The actives have been getting names and planning meetings with campus organizations to tell their story. They have an "info night" planned for next Tuesday (Sept 28) in the Student Center. In attendance will be university men who have expressed interest in joining a fraternity.

- The Chapter is starting the semester with 5 active brothers.

- The Chapter has been informed by HQ that they have until December 31 to reach the all-fraternity average (32), or the Delta Chi International average (30), in members, or be suspended from campus. This is a lofty goal with only 5 actives. But, if our guys can make a valiant effort in recruitment, we are confident the doors will stay open.

- Kent State Homecoming is Saturday, October 9. Kent will play Akron in football at 3:30.

- We are planning a dinner for Founder's Day on Wednesday, October 13. Time and location are to be determined. Stay tuned for more details.

- We had a nice turn out at the International Conference in New Orleans. Actives, Chris Wortman and Jason Peters both attended with some help from the ABT. A few alumni were also in attendance. At the event, both Nick Hohenberger and myself received Meritorious Service awards from the Fraternity. Nick and I are truly honored.

- Thanks in-part to some unfortunate feedback, our donation drive was less than successful. If any one is interested in donating to the Chapter, our PayPal donation account is still active. Just go to PayPal.com and use the email: dxksu@att.net. Your donation would be greatly appreciated.

In the bond,

Eric

Please Donate to Help our Chapter

Brothers,

As many of you know, this last year has been a crazy one for our Chapter. While going through the rebuilding process of a Conservatorship, we lost a significant portion of our membership. Some of those members were asked to leave, while others left on their own, while still others were simply not eligible to be active. This combined with mounting debt owed to HQ, has made a rebound quite challenging. Despite that, I am happy to say, membership has stabilized, grades have drastically improved, and the Chapter has begun to pay down their debt. But we are not out of the woods yet. This coming fall semester will be perhaps the most important one in our history at Kent State.

Additionally, starting August 8th, Delta Chi will be holding its 57th International Convention in New Orleans. Normally, the Chapter covers the cost to send delegates. But because of recent financial troubles, the Chapter can not afford it. ABT feels it is imperative to send at least 2 delegates to this year's convention. Not doing so would result in a steep fine, further complicating the Chapter's ability to get out of debt. To help, ABT has agreed to allocate $900 to help cover registration, hotel, travel and other costs. But we want to do better.

Brothers, we are asking you if you will please donate what you can to help send our active brothers to this important event, as well as to help our Chapter so that they may focus on recruitment and growth.

We have set up a PayPal account to accept donations. The all fraternity mens average was 2.66. The fraternity in 1st place received a 2.88.

This breaks their goal, of a 2.75, by .02. No brother had below a 2.57. Therefore all are academically eligible to return in the fall. The Chapter will be moving forward with NO ONE on academic probation.

Way to go boys! We are very proud of you. Your hard work and determination, in the face of great adversity this semester, has paid off.

In the bond,

Eric

Sign up for our Yahoo Group

Thanks to Brother Rich Downey we have a new way to communicate and stay in touch. A 4 month payment plan was established. As of the meeting on the 14th, no payments had been made on the debt. ABT has give Brett until June 30 to collect and submit payment.

Contracts

We discussed a new plan for managing and collecting membership/dues contracts. We are considering appointing an alumnus to manage this process. He would be required to show up at the first Chapter meeting each semester and have all Chapter members sign contracts. He will act as the keeper of the contracts. It will be up to the "A" and "D" to get contracts for anyone not in attendance at the first meeting. Any one who does not sign a contract by meeting 2 will be automatically inactive.

Dues

Dues for the next school year have been set at $430 per semester, or $800 for the year - paid in full by week 2. There will be no payment plan option. If a member can not pay dues in full by week 2, he may pay half ($215), and may pay the second half by week 4, plus a $50 fee ($265). If not payment is made at week 2, member will be automatically inactive. If no payment is made at week 4, member will be automatically inactive, and no refund will be given.

Grades

An across-the-board grade requirement has been set for the Chapter. Anyone wishing to be active in the Chapter, or hold an executive board position must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA. This eliminates any confusion over initiation or executive board eligibility.

Recruitment

We're happy to announce Danny Camp will be our new Chapter Recruitment chairman. He will begin working immediately on a summer and fall plan. We are also pleased to announce Danny will be assisted by newly appointed Alumni Board Recruitment Advisor Darren Talbert. Thank you both Darren and Danny for taking on these important rolls for our Chapter!

As of today we have not planned the next ABT meeting yet. Stay tuned for an announcement.

In the bond,

Eric

20th Anniversary Dinner - THANKS!

Thanks to all the brothers who attended the dinner and after-party this past Saturday. We also removed all composites, paddles, trophies and any other important Delta Chi items. They are all now safely in our possession.

We removed these items for no other reason than to protect them. This DOES NOT mean the Chapter is closing. Since we have officially lost this house for next year, we just want to hold these items in preparation for a new house, whenever that may be. In addition, we had some concerns of damage. So we decided to act now rather than wait until the the "spring party season" kicks in to gear.

As far as a replacement house is concerned, the Kent State Chapter will be moving forward next school year without a house.

There will be one location we know of that will house a few Delta Chi's next year. However, there are inactive members and non-Delta Chi's who will also be living there. Therefore, we will not be recognizing that location as the Chapter House.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

In the bond,

Eric

ABT Meeting Notes

Sorry for the delay in this posting.

As of the last ABT meeting on March 3, the Chapter was holding steady, with relatively little to report.

In attendance were: Nick, Marquez, Boze, Marzi, George and Doug Tayek, and myself. Representing the Chapter was Kyle Evans (A) and Chris Wortman (E).

Finances:

As mentioned, ABT is now in control of the books, and with a majority of Spring '10 dues collected, we have begun the process of paying down the Chapter's debt with HQ. As part of that we will be paying initiation dues for 2 AMs: Scott Widman and Danny Camp.

Additionally, we have identified approximately $750 in dues outstanding from previous semesters. Doug Tayek has accepted the responsibility of collected that money.

Regarding the collection of moneys spent on utilities, we have no progress to report other than several members have agreed to pay their portion of that money in installments.

Action Plan Update:

We spent some time discussing this plan at the meeting. When we created that plan it was under the assumption the Chapter would be 12-15 strong. Very shortly after we distributed the plan several members dropped, while others became academically ineligible. Therefore, it is probably no surprise that, with only 6 actives, little from the plan has been accomplished.

Regional:

The Region VI Conference will be held April 9-11 in Columbus Ohio - hosted by The Ohio State Colony. Registration is $40 for alumni.

Our Chapter will have 4 members in attendance.

House:

As of the last meeting, no progress has been made by Rob Cheffins on obtaining a new Chapter house for next year.

20th Anniversary Banquet:

Our 20th Anniversary Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, April 24 at Portage Country Club in Akron. That money was never reimbursed, and the Chapter now faces a $2200 debt with HQ, along with mounting debt to Time Warner.

After last night's meeting, ABT now seems to have some questions answered and the books under control. We have put the responsibility of recouping this money solely on the actives, former and current Chapter leadership, as well as the house members. Rest assured, the Chapter will no longer be spending their funds on house utilities. Kyle, Brett and Chris came up with a plan at last night's meeting to attempt to recoup as much of that money as possible.

House

As for the house, I am sorry to report, 312 Main Street will no longer be the Delta Chi house after this semester. Due to a drop in membership, the Chapter simply did not have enough members to fill the 13 man house. Jim Houch, our current landlord, was very flexible in working with us. But ultimately, the Chapter could not meet his deadline. Rob Cheffins (B) has taken on the task of finding a new smaller house. As of last night, there was no official progress on a new location. We are certain however, the new location will not allow the Chapter to hang letters, as there are no other available houses in the City of Kent zoned appropriately.

Action Plan Progress

As I mentioned in a previous post, the Chapter was provided an action plan as a guide for this semester. If you would like to see that plan, please email us and I'll be happy to send you the PDF. It was given to them under the assumption they would have at least a 12 man chapter with which to move forward. Currently, they are at 6 actives and 5 AM's (3 of whom are eligible for initiation, all of whom are carryovers from the fall) with no new AM's or rush events planned. At the next ABT meeting we will be evaluating the Chapter's progress with that plan. So far we have seen little progress. If that trend continues, it is likely we will have to consider the option of closing the Chapter.

New Faculty Advisor

To end on a positive, I am pleased to report the Chapter has a new faculty advisor. Dr. Eugene Helton has agreed to step in as Gail Hull's replacement. Kyle will be meeting with Dr. Helton this week, and I will be meeting him in the following weeks. Those of you planning to attend the 20th Anniversary Banquet on April 24th, will get the chance to meet him too, as he has promised to attend.

Important Dates

- Next ABT Meeting planned for Wednesday, March 3 @ 7:00 at the Student Center

- 20th Anniversary Banquet set for Saturday, April 24 at Portage Country Club in Akron

Your comments, questions, suggestions are always welcome...

Fraternally,

Eric Hancsak

ABT Meeting Planned for Feb. 9

The next ABT meeting has been planned for Tuesday, February 9 at 7:00 at the Student Center.

Chapter Grades Released for Fall 2009

For the Fall 2009 semester the Chapter showed a marginal overall improvement in grades, moving from 2.39 in the Spring to 2.52 in the Fall. Compared to other fraternities, Delta Chi ranked 12/16 in the Fall as compared to 14/16 in the Spring. The Chapter's active member average was 2.71 for Fall, up from 2.39 for Spring, ranking 9/16. Our AM's did not fair as well. They came in with a 2.01 average, ranking 15/16. No AM GPA was reported for Spring, as there were no Associate Members in the Chapter.

For future reference, we post rankings and grades status in the column to the right.

Chapter Update - Conservator's Report

Brothers,

Happy New Year! Here are some notes on what has been happening recently, and over winter break with our chapter.

At the end of last fall semester, after the membership reviews were concluded and our decisions made, I made the decision to be a little more hands-off with the guys after a few intense weeks. I gave instructions to focus on grades and begin putting together a plan for the spring rush. Also at that time, I decided the house was to be dry through winter break. We knew that this policy would be very difficult to enforce, especially when we have 3 inactives and one hold-over AM living in the house through spring.

A week or so ago I received a report that several brothers were witnessed drinking at the house on several occasions. When I received this information, I immediately issued an email to the entire chapter reiterating the dry house policy - the consequences of which would be recommendation for expulsion. At this point, we are still investigating.

Over break, I have had good communication with Kyle Evans, our "A". The main subject of our conversations has been the house - and whether or not we can fill it next year. The landlord wants to get leases signed within a couple weeks. It appears that many of the actives are not interested in living in the house. Kyle feels this is due in part to the dry house policy, even though it is temporary. That said, as of today, there were only 2 actives who confirmed they would live in the house. We need at least 11 to keep it, and 13 to fill it. I'm pretty sure that number will go up once guys get back from break. But at this point, it is entirely possible we will be losing this house. As a side note, there are no other available houses in Kent that are zoned to allow a fraternity to hang letters.

Tomorrow evening, a group of alumni will be meeting at my house to discuss the chapter. At that time, we will be putting together an action plan for spring. We will also be discussing options on what to do with the house, and how to respond to violations of the dry house policy. We will also be discussing options on what to do about the house itself.

If you have any questions, or comments, please do not hesitate. Over the period of 2 evenings, we discussed various issues with each member to get their input and ideas. We also evaluated their performance within the chapter, took into consideration their current grades, dues balance, behavior issues and listened to criticisms (both positive and negative) from other brothers.

In the end, we made the following decisions (names are begin withheld):

• 2 brothers are inactive effective immediately, one of whom may apply for reinstatement in the Fall 2010

• 3 brothers who are currently inactive will remain so, one of whom may reactivate in the Fall 2010

• 1 brother who is currently inactive will be conditionally reactivated in the Spring 2010

• 2 AM's will be held over until Spring

Additionally, Brett Polzcynski has stepped down as "A", and will be taking on the role of AMC. As expected International approved this measure, and appointed Eric Hancsak as Conservator.

What does this mean? Simply put, the Conservator has total control over day-to-day operations of the chapter. The only powers not given to the Conservator are expulsion of a member, and pulling the charter. But he can recommend either. This does not, however, mean that the E-board members have been relieved of their duties. All E-board members' responsibilities will remain intact, prior to a membership review.

Last Sunday, Nov 1, Eric conducted an important meeting with the chapter to discuss this move. Nine of the 26 AM's and actives were absent. For those in attendance the meeting was a productive one. Each member was addressed personally and given a task for their position.

It was also decided that a membership review will take place. A membership review entails an interview with each member individually, conducted by a group of alumni. All aspects of the members' fraternity experience will be discussed, including leadership, participation, grades, goals etc. After the reviews are complete, the reviewers will decided which members may remain active. A definitive schedule has not been set. But the plan is to conduct these reviews Nov 10, 11 and 12.

Once the reviews are complete, and membership and positions have been set, a clearer picture will unfold as to how this process of Conservatorship will move ahead.

In the meantime, we will be posting routine updates here on the blog. Please sign up for the RSS Feed or Email Alert, to the right, if you have not yet done so.

Also, please feel free to post comments, questions or concerns, or drop us an email. Now more than ever, we need alumni support and input!

In the bond.

PS: Here are a few dates of interest:

Songfest - Sat, Nov 14

AM Retreat - Sun, Nov 15

I-Week - Nov 16-21

Intitiation - Sat, Nov 21

Thanksgiving Break - Nov 25-27

Finals Week - Dec 14-18

ABT Meeting Notes

The Oct. 20 ABT Meeting was held at the Student Center. Brother's Marzi (BB), Hohenberger (ABT Pres.), Brown (Regent), Polcynski (A), Eulberg, and Hancsak (ABT Alumni Advisor) were in attendance.

We discussed a range of issues regarding the Chapter's current status. Here is a breakdown of the meeting:

1. The motion was brought and passed for the ABT to recommend to International that the Chapter be placed on conservatorship. It is expected that International will approve this measure and ABT will begin the search for a conservator.

2. The Chapter will remain on University-imposed social probation for remainder of the semester, as punishment for a recent alcohol violation. To fulfill their requirement with the University, the Chapter will be scheduling an education seminar to discuss all risk management policies with the membership.

3. The ABT voted to make the entire house dry (both public and private spaces included) for the remainder of the semester including winter break. Status to be reevaluated at the first ABT meeting in 2010.

4. The chapter will participate in the upcoming Xi Man and Anchor Man events, and will continue with the OSU Football fundraisers.

5. The chapter has elected to postpone all Halloween activities this semester.

6. Next ABT Meeting is scheduled for November 17 @ 7:00.

Next ABT Meeting - October 20 @ 7:00

Our next ABT meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, 7:00 at the Student Center.

Homecoming Alumni Dinner

Thanks to the guys who gathered for tonight's alumni dinner at Bellacino's: Eric Hancsak, Mike Weaver, Drew Dallet, Dan Russell, Marquez Brown, Nick Hohenberger, Ken Weiss (not pictured). We currently have 17 active brothers, and 5 associate members. We are constantly recruiting and searching for new potential members to join in our bond of brotherhood.

We just had our Associate Member Ceremony this past weekend where we associated 5 new members. Homecoming is coming up this weekend (October 10th @ 10:00 am), and the chapter can't wait to be reunited with the Alumni. This will be a great time for everyone to get together and swap stories of the past 20 years. The chapter is currently searching for a new Faculty Advisor to replace Gail Hull, who is retiring from the University. Although we may be able to replace her as our advisor, we will never replace the impact she has had on our fraternity over the years.

Campus Involvement

The chapter is actively involved on campus, we participated in Greek Clean-Up Week by donating to a blood drive, planting flowers, and helping clean up the sidewalks downtown. We have also been selling concessions at the Ohio State games down in Columbus, which is contributing to our national philanthropy for cancer research. The chapter is looking forward to Songfest coming up on Novenber 14th, our President, Brett Polczynski guarantees victory.

Alumni Spotlight

We know that the current members are not the only brothers the Alumni want to hear about, so we have decided to add an "Alumni Spotlight" to every edition of the newsletter. This section will focus on one or two alumni.

Jason Kee

Jason Kee graduated from Kent State University May of 2004. He attended Law School at the University of Akron and graduated with a Juris Doctorate in May of 2007. Key passed the Ohio Bar exam and has been practicing law since November 2007.

Kee previously worked for the law firm of Zollinger, Gruber, Thomas & Co., however on October 2, 2009, he decided to open up his own practice in Newark, Ohio. He is currently practicing in the areas of family law, most notably divorce and custody cases, minor traffic offenses and DUIs, counsel for homeowners and condominium owners associations, and other aspects of real estate and real property law.

Kee was married to Heather Anderson, a sister of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority at Kent State University, July 1, 2005. He quit smoking in February of 2008, prior to the birth of our first child, Olivia Joy Ellen Kee, on July 1, 2008.

Kee lived in Stow until October, and just recently moved to Newark, which is part of the greater Columbus metropolitan area. He has been active with the Alumni Board of Trustees for the Kent State Chapter since graduating from Law School. Kee encourages other alumni to also get involved; it is great to see many different perspectives on the Board.

One of hisfavorite memories was the year that he lived in the attic with Rick Wilson, and Christopher Gutekunst living across the hall. There are many stories that evolve from that year and particularly from his close living quarters with those two.

Kee's big brother is Joshua Brunger, his grand big is Andrew Farkas. His little is Jeff Kuntz, his grand little is Matt Linn, and his great grand little is Pete Francis (who is currently an Active Brother).

contact information is:

Jason P. Kee, Esq.

29 S.
